Abstract: | As the first State to accept Islam in the Central and Western Sudan, Kanem-Borno developed a strong tradition of scholarship and learning. There emerged in the society an elite class of intelligentsia called 'malamwa' (ulama). The author examines the role of scholars and scholarship in the history of Borno, covering the period from the establishment of the Saifawa dynasty to the advent of European colonialism in northern Nigeria in the early 19th century. She includes a chapter on Sheikh Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi, the reformer who emerged in the early 19th century. |
