Abstract:Portuguese text. English sum.: Since its independence in 1975 Mozambique has received substantial development assistance, both from Eastern European and from OECD countries, as well as from multilateral donors and NGOs. Until late 1992 the country has been fustigated by a destructive and murderous 'civil war'. Since 1987 it has been implementing a World Bank/IMF supported Economic Rehabilitation Programme (ERP). This article establishes the long-term balance of official development assistance (ODA) to Mozambique. It explores the relationships between development cooperation, structural adjustment, the living conditions of the population and the social restructuring during the war. Particular attention is given to mutual compatibilities and/or trade-offs. Ann., bibliogr., notes, ref.
