Abstract: | This book contains a number of papers on the economy and society of the traditional sector of Sudan, based on research in the field. El Sammani A. Yacoub analyses the present state of application of science and technology for development in Sudan, including the role of the National Council for Research (NCR). Mustafa A. Rahman Mustafa discusses productivity in the traditional sector in the case of Radoam area, southern Darfur. Ali Abdel Gadir Ali considers some aspects of productivity in Sudanese traditional agriculture based on a study of labour and land productivity in the Northern Province. Mark R. Duffield deals with peripheral capitalism and the social relations of agricultural production in the village of Maiurno near Sennar. In considering how traditional 'traditional' agriculture is, J. O'Brien contrasts aspects of traditional agriculture as practised in Um Fila, a village in the Blue Nile Province, with modern agriculture as it is practised in the Habila project in southern Kordofan. Abd-El Muhsin Mustafa Salih explores the malformation of the Sudanese economy and offers some suggestions for its restructuring. |
