Abstract:The main focus of this paper is discussion of didactics in the context of a new South Africa. Didactics is seen as both a science and a discipline. The paper argues that education in a new South Africa is a contested terrain. Therefore, there is a need for a new paradigm in the pedagogy of South African schools. That pedagogy should be reflective, liberatory, and emancipatory so as to enable both teachers and pupils to be active and reflective practitioners in the teaching and learning process. The focus of the new didactics should be on re-establishing a culture of teaching and learning in South African schools. The paper also discusses the concept of school effectiveness in the context of a new South Africa. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
