Teaching practice
Abstract:This study identifies experiences during teaching practice which student teachers associated with a successful and unsuccessful teaching practice experience. The sample comprised 58 student teachers enrolled in the Higher Education Diploma or the Education Primary degree at the University of Namibia who did their teaching practice in Namibian schools during the 1991 academic year. The results indicate that helpful host teachers, disciplined and cooperative students, and guidance from both university lecturers, host teachers and fellow student teachers contributed to a successful teaching practice experience. On the other hand, truant host teachers, rude and indisciplined students, lack of teaching materials in the school and clash of expectations (about what the student teacher was expected to do) between the university and host school were viewed as factors contributing to an unsuccessful teaching practice experience.
