Abstract: | The major objective of Zimbabwe's Adult Literacy and Post-Literacy Project for the period 1987 to 1991 was to reduce the number of the illiterate from about 2.5 million (60 percent of the adult population) to about 400,000. Data for the present evaluation of the project were collected in June 1991 through the review of several relevant documents, personal interviews with 104 relevant educational personnel, and observations of 30 literacy centres throughout the country. The study revealed that, largely due to financial constraints, the project added a total of only 34,447 new literates to the literate population of Zimbabwe. Nevertheless, the project did make a significant contribution towards the socioeconomic and/or psychological well-being of most of the people who joined literacy related activities during the period under review. The study results clearly suggest that future literacy projects would achieve more, both quantitatively and qualitatively, if more funds could be injected into them. App., bibliogr., sum. |
