Abstract: | This paper studies the traditional religion of the Gikuyu of Kenya, highlighting philosophical issues. It uses Gikuyu religious proverbs, many of which refer to God in an explicit manner. It considers in turn the Gikuyu conception of God as uncharacterizable and as distributor, the monotheism of Gikuyu religion, the Gikuyu belief in immortality, Gikuyu prayer and special prayers, exemplified by the prayer for rain and the prayer of thanksgiving, and the Gikuyu belief in God's immanence and transcendence.
