Abstract:This book contains 27 papers on the Traditional Techniques of Microclimate Improvement (TTMI) Project, coordinated at Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands. The TTMI Project started in Tanzania and Kenya in the 1980s as a multidisciplinary approach to the study and application of methods (such as mulching, intercropping, shelterbelts and shading) of microclimate management and manipulation in low external input agriculture by traditional farmers. It includes a joint venture higher education research training component, whereby African university students carry out research in their home countries, write up their thesis in the Netherlands, and then return to finish their research and obtain their degree: the 'picnic' model. A review of the 'picnic' model and TTMI research is followed by country reports on the project in Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and Nigeria; subsequent chapters discuss agricultural research priorities, research funding, national capacity building, and extension work in Kenya. The remaining chapters refer to policies and management of the TTMI Project and include presentations by past and present TTMI PhD students of work carried out through the 'picnic' model approach.
