Abstract:This collective volume contains papers read at the international seminar on the management and conservation of the water resources of the Lake Chad Basin (Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger, Chad), held at N'Djamena, Chad, 3-5 June 1987. The papers examine the following subjects: Ch. 1, Meteorology and climatology (rainfall and drought in the Lake Chad Basin); Ch. 2, Hydrology and hydrogeology (water balance models, Nile flow, lake levels, groundwater development, oil exploration and water management, the possible disappearance of Lake Chad, remote sensing in hydrological practices, geothermal outline, regulating the flow of the Logone River); Ch. 3, Agriculture and forestry (impact of water resources management on livestock production and wildlife conservation, impact of climatic disturbance on the pasture system, the Satégui-Déressia rice development project, potentials of fishing industry, soil moisture requirements for wheat and barley, technical problems of irrigation, water use and pasture management); Ch. 4, Water use by man (demand for water in Maiduguri, health implications of water resources development programmes, community participation in well development projects, pollution studies of Jos plateau surface waters, water resources development in the Komadougou-Yobé basin); Ch. 5, Water resources and regional cooperation (monitoring of the Niger by satellite remote sensing, cartographic presentation of underground water resources, regional cooperation for water resources development).
