Abstract:After reviewing some of the conceptual and operational issues involved in the measurement of poverty, the author provides a measure of poverty for Nigeria based on average household needs for food, shelter, education, clothing and transport. The author stresses the desirability of setting an acceptable national minimum standard for the nonfood needs. The study is based on data from a sample survey of 980 households which was conducted between October 1984 and January 1985 in Borno, Imo and Oyo States. App., bibliogr., notes.
