Abstract: | The chapters in this book were first presented as papers at a seminar on doctoral level education in economics in sub-Saharan Africa, held in Cape Town, South Africa, in May 1993. An introductory paper sets out the preconditions for setting up a doctoral level programme in economics in an African university (William S. Saint). The next three papers sketch the current institutional setting, in particular the demand for PhD training in economics in anglophone Africa, except Nigeria (Logan Pakkiri and Befekadu Degefe), francophone Africa (Adama Bakayoko), and Nigeria (Afolabi Soyode). Craufurd Goodwin deals with the PhD in economics in the USA, and Befekadu Degefe discusses the retention of professionals in Ethiopia and Tanzania. The last three chapters examine the experiences of the Rockefeller Foundation PhD Fellowship Programme (David Court), the doctoral programme in the Economics of Development at the Australian National University (Suiwah Leung), and the doctoral education in economics programme at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, operating in conjunction with Lund University in Sweden (Göte Hansson and Robert Mabele). |
