| Abstract: | This paper examines gender differences in pass rates in the primary-leaving examination in Côte d'Ivoire. The data used were drawn from the Côte d'Ivoire Living Standards Survey (CILSS) for 1986, with additional information being gathered from the CILSSs for 1985 and 1987. Each survey had a nationally representative sample of 1600 households and gathered information using a lengthy general purpose questionnaire. Girls completing primary schooling in Côte d'Ivoire are less likely to go to secondary schools because of inferior performance in the examination used to ration access. The gender gap in educational achievement varies with household economic status, with poverty inhibiting girls' performance more than boys'. Female students from poorer households spend less time in school than their male counterparts and allocate more time to housework. Reduced time in school has a negative effect on examination performance and hence time allocation explains much of the gender gap in educational achievement. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. |
