Abstract: | This book contains two studies on religion in Uganda. The first examines a Muslim regime established in the 1880s in Buganda which lasted from 22 October 1888 to 16 January 1890, the only time in the history of Buganda that a Muslim king ruled the country. The rise and fall of Kabaka (king) Kalema reflects the balance of internal forces in Buganda at the time and their conflicting interests; the rivalries between the Christian factions and their different attitudes to the European powers; the position of the traditionalists and their influence on the balance of power between the Christians and the Muslims; the attitude of the British; and Arab and Swahili interests. The second study deals with the emergence, development, decline and resurgence of a community of African Jews, or 'Bayudaya', in Gangama near Mbale. The community was founded in the 1920s by Semei Lwakilenzi Kakungulu, a political entrepreneur of the Ganda tribe, who was refused the title of Kabaka by the British and then first joined a breakaway Christian sect, the Bamalaki, before converting to Judaism. The author visited the community regularly in the 1960s and agian in 1994. |
