Abstract: | Proverbs are routinely used among the Igbo of southeastern Nigeria to advise, warn, request, criticize and perform numerous other speech acts. The indirectness of the proverb mitigates the inherent unpleasantness of what is being said, as well as conferring on it a greater degree of politeness. Data for the paper come from the author's collection of Igbo proverbs. Ref. |
