Abstract: | The chapters in this book are mostly revised versions of papers first presented at a conference on population displacement and mass voluntary return of refugees in northeast Africa held in Addis Ababa in September 1992. Enoch O. Opondo gives a contextual overview of socioeconomic, legal and administrative constraints on the repatriation processes in the Horn. Barbara Hendrie deals with Tigrayan refugee repatriation; Elias Habte-Selassie, Gaim Kibreab, Jonathan Bascom, and David Styan with the case of Eritrea; David Turton with the Mursi and K.N. Getachew with the Garri, both in southwestern Ethiopia; Ahmed Yusuf Farah with Ethiopia's lowland pastoralists; Julius Holt and Richard Hogg with returnees in the Ogaden; M.A. Mohamed Salih with the Sudanese experience; Douglas H. Johnson with the Sudanese refugee camps in Ethiopia 1991; Wendy James with Uduk resttlement on the Sudan-Ethiopian border; E.A. Brett and Tim Allen with Uganda; Melissa Parker with social devastation and mental health in northeast Africa; Yonas Endale with Ethiopia's mental health; Amelia Brett with testimonies of war trauma in Uganda; and Michael M. Cernea with commonalities and differences between situations where people are displaced. Terence Ranger gives a personal summing up of the symposium. |
