Abstract: | This survey of the literature on salt production and salt trade in Kenya looks separately at the coast and the interior, and the historical as well as more recent aspects of the subject. Although the coast was involved in considerable local and long-distance trade in salt, there seems to have been little large-scale production of this item until recent times. In the interior, production and trade was also mostly at fairly local levels. One question considered is the difficulty, at the coast, of distinguishing local production and trade from external. Another issue is the question of why a larger local production and trade network did not apparently develop in earlier times. Comparison is made with other salt-working areas, especially in West Africa. Notes, ref., sum. |
