Abstract:Rural feeder roads in most developing countries leave much to be desired. This paper examines some transport problems facing rural areas in Tanzania. It is an outcome of a survey of 39 villages in two divisions (Mhukuru and Hanga) of Songea rural district which took place in December 1991. The paper argues that the supply of transport services would encourage agriculture as well as off-farm activities in the rural areas, which in turn may raise the standard of living of the rural population. Inadequate transportation services on the other hand may hamper socioeconomic development. Transportation planning should direct economic activities to those areas where the land is idle.
