| Abstract: | This article traces the decline in political violence which marked the end of South Africa's transition to democracy and explains growing levels of crime and their relationship - if any - to the political and social transformation in the society. The study focuses in particular on attempts to control crime since the Government of National Unity (GNU) took office in May 1994. This includes an overview of changes in the South African Police (SAP) Services and new initiatives in city policing. Finally, changing forms of private policing are examined and the implications for the future of policing the city in South Africa are considered. Notes, ref. |
