Abstract: | Social work as a profession has an obligation to respond to and, if necessary create, societal agendas. Social development is clearly on the current societal agenda. The authors examine the different emphases and levels of social development and advocate a broad perspective of the concept. They explore the relationship between social development and social work and address the importance of education if social workers are to participate in social development initiatives, referring to the work being done at the University of Natal in Durban (South Africa) to integrate education for community development into the social work curriculum. They touch on several content areas which are crucial to the teaching of a developmental social work approach, the importance of fieldwork training, and the need for training at different levels (undergraduate, masters, refresher courses).
