Abstract: | This article discusses the experiences of two settler wives in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, in the first few decades after the arrival of the English settlers in the early 19th century. The article focuses closely on the writing of the two women, using techniques of discourse analysis to try to understand something of what happened to women in frontier situations. The women, Mary Anne Web and Hannah Dennison, who both arrived in the Eastern Cape in 1820, wrote letters to their families describing their experiences and their situations. In their writing they reveal the hardship that many of the settlers experienced, as well as some of the ways in which settler attitudes and perceptions could develop. Their writing also reveals how important concerns of appropriate gender behaviour were to them. Notes, ref. |
