Abstract: | This article examines what the agenda is for the women's rights movement in Africa touching also on issues addressed by the women's rights movement at the global level. The author starts by examining the role gender plays in violence against women. Then she analyses the following issues: women's rights to property; women's rights and cultural and traditional rites; AIDS and women's rights; reproductive rights as women's rights; the right to contraception, sterilization and abortion; women's rights in educational institutions; economic rights for women; violations of women in the mass media; and the rights of women as refugees and displaced persons.
