Abstract: | This paper focuses on the production and dissemination of scholarly knowledge in Africa with particular emphasis on francophone countries. It argues for greater involvement of scholars and academic publishers in the dissemination of their intellectual output. Special attention is given to issues related to the transfer of knowledge from one language to another, the nature of African scholarship, the reading culture of Africans and misconceptions about the current book famine in Africa, the institutional framework available to the francophone African scholarly community, the production and distribution of scholarly publications and, finally, emerging trends in financing scholarly publishing in Africa.
