Abstract: | The central objective of this study is to analyse the social causes and consequences of land degradation on the Qala en Nahal refugee settlement scheme in the Gedaref district of Sudan. The majority of the Eritrean refugees in the Qala en Nahal refugee settlement came to Sudan between February and March 1967. The study first establishes the current level of land degradation in the central rainlands of Sudan, specifically in the Qala en Nahal area. Then it unravels the economic, political, social, institutional and motivational factors underlying the process of land degradation; assesses the consequences of resource degradation on the living conditions of the resource users concerned, both Sudanese and Eritrean; and examines the responses of the resource users to land degradation. The traditional resource-management systems that were operative among the Eritreans before they fled to Sudan are documented, as well as the degree of change that has occurred. The study also deals with the role of the Sudanese State in the management of natural resources and in the disruption of previous resource-management systems. |
