Abstract: | The sources discussed in this paper are those written in the first century of the European 'discovery of Guinea' and therefore they relate mainly to Portuguese activities, or at least to activities under the aegis of the Portuguese. The sources fall into three categories: archive documents, extended accounts, and maps. The paper focuses on the extended accounts, most of which were written in Portuguese. One aim of the paper is to list available translations, particularly translations into English. Another aim is to draw attention to the scholarly editions of the sources presently available or to the lack of scholarly editions available. The paper offers some limited comment on the content and validity of the individual sources. Finally, the paper has historiographical content, since it records certain stages in the development of the study of African history and draws conclusions about this. Notes, ref. |
