Abstract: | Amongst the Angwi, a matrilineal Bantu-speaking people of western Zaire, also known as Ngul and Ngoli, the dead continue to participate in community life, giving advice and directives for the welfare of the clan and society. The funeral rites observed by the Angwi reveal their fear of the wrath of the ancestors, whom they are bound to worship constantly. The author describes mourning, funerary rites and memorial celebrations among the Angwi, based on data collected in 1984-1985. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in French (p. 628). |
