Abstract: | In recognition of the important role of food prices in determining nutritional outcomes, and the potential impacts that adjustment programmes may have on food prices, this paper examines movements in food prices in Ghana during the period following the country's adoption of economic reforms. The primary interest of the paper is in overall trends in food prices, and changes in these trends across commodities and markets during the adjustment and postadjustment periods. The focus is on the period 1970-1993. The paper discusses the ways in which adjustment policies are linked to agricultural prices; examines the salient features of Ghana's structural adjustment programme and the impact of the country's economic reforms on the cost of food; and looks at price variability from the perspectives of storage and marketing. The results show that real wholesale prices of food in Ghana have been declining since the 1970s. Price trends in the 1980s are characterized by a downward shift at the beginning of the postreform period and a subsequent continuing downward trend. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. |
