Abstract:The Igede, also known as Egedde or Igedde, have their contemporary homeland in Benue State, Nigeria. The present author, who was born and brought up in Igede, examined and recorded Igede dirges during field research carried out in 1981. In this article he highlights the literary aspects of the Igede dirges, the expressive power with which dirge composers stimulate their listeners emotionally and intellectually. An outline of the context of Igede dirges is followed by an analysis of the form and structure of the Igede dirge. Three examples of Igede dirges are presented, in Igede with an English translation. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and French.
