Abstract:	This article first discusses the 1979 policy statement of the government of Nigeria concerning its educational policy, paying special attention to the implications of the statement for language policy at the various levels of education - preprimary, primary, secondary, teacher training, higher, technical and adult or continuing. Then it examines the implementation of the language component of the national policy on education, distinguishing between status planning, i.e. the selection and establishing of certain languages for official, national or state use, and corpus planning or language construction, i.e. the actual development of the languages chosen for status, by standardization, extension of vocabulary, publishing, and media use. A trilingual configuration has emerged in Nigeria - Community Languages, Major Languages (Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba), and English. Notes, ref.
