Abstract: | The properties of soil under 5-year old and 15-year old oil palm and rubber plantations were analysed and compared with those of natural forest soil on similar sites in southwestern Nigeria. The study indicated that oil palm and rubber plantation have no significant effect on soil texture. The physical status of soil under natural rainforest was slightly better than that of soil on 15-year old rubber and oil palm plantations. Organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorus declined in plantation soil relative to forest levels. However there was no significant decline in the levels of exchangeable bases in soil under tree plantation. Bibliogr., sum. |
