Abstract: | In 1933 an eight-sheet series of maps was published portraying the whole of Botswana at a much larger scale than any previously published map. It was the first cartographic portrayal of the entire Bechuanaland Protectorate since 1912. This article first summarizes the history of mapmaking in Botswana prior to 1933, relating it to British colonial mapmaking elsewhere in Africa. Then it examines in more detail the five-year compilation history of the 1933 series, which helps to explain both the content and the variable accuracy of the map. Bibliogr., sum. |
