Abstract: | The GATT Uruguay Round incorporated three new items for negotiation. One of these is Trade Related Investment Measures (TRIMs). TRIMs have been described as trade-restrictive and distorting investment measures. They primarily relate to conditions imposed by host countries on operations established by foreign investors. The measures most commonly found in developing countries relate to local content, local equity, and export and transfer of technology requirements. The present article analyses the impact of multilateral regulation of investment on the economies of sub-Saharan Africa. It discusses the economic effects of TRIMs and the case for and against multilateral regulation of TRIMs. It ends with an analysis and critique of the provisions of the Dunkel draft agreement on TRIMS from a developing countries' perspective.
