Abstract:This study examines economic activities located in small towns and the specific environment in which they operate. Part I is theoretical and general. Part II presents a case study of the development of two district service centres, Gutu and Gokwe, in the communal areas of Zimbabwe, where fieldwork was carried out in the period 1989 to 1995. It presents an analysis of the development of retail trade, services and wholesale trade in the two centres, and analyses trade and production in three sectors, namely agroprocessing and marketing, the clothing sector, and the construction sector and building material trade and production.
