Abstract: | This article assesses the evolution and current state of Ethiopian studies as reflected in the five international conferences held between 1981 and 1991: at Lund (1982), Addis Ababa (1984 and 1991), Moscow (1986) and Paris (1988). A striking feature of these Ethiopian studies conferences has been the steady increase in the number of participants, a development which has entailed some reorganization. Another positive development is the increasing role that the Ethiopian constituency has come to assume. The papers presented at the conferences give a representative picture of Ethiopian studies. The article reviews the quantitative and qualitative profile of the papers, the themes that emerged, the methodological gains, and the contribution of Ethiopian scholars, under four headings: prehistory, archaeology and history; linguistics and literature; anthropology; and contemporary issues. A bibliographical listing of papers presented from the first to the eleventh international conferences of Ethiopian studies (1959-1991), together with author and subject indexes, compiled by Sushma Gupta and revised and edited by Taddesse Tamrat, follows the article (p. 29-142).
