Abstract: | This article deals with precolonial goldmining in Zimbabwe and describes the prospecting of gold and its production, gold reduction and processing, and the gold trade. As goldmining decreased, other commodities came on to the market, such as ivory and slaves. However, traditional gold production did not cease completely until the early years of the 20th century, when colonial laws marginalized the indigenous producers to give preference to white industry.
