Abstract: | This article is based on research carried out among students of the University of Fort Hare English 1 course in 1991. The issues raised by these students are difficulties that have been experienced by students at English departments throughout South Africa. Students complain that they do not understand a great deal that goes on in the study of literature. They are not sure what is expected of them and find various literary terms and expressions hard to grasp. Despite a trend towards Africanization, there are still plenty of dead white men on an average English 1 syllabus. The article considers the potential literature that has to fulfil various functions, and the possible ways in which the study of literature could assist student development in certain areas at first-year level. Finally, the article describes how teachers can begin to realize some of this potential in the light of the problem areas mentioned by the students. App., bibliogr., notes. |
