| Abstract: | This volume is the product of a conference on Islam, culture, commerce, and politics in Sierra Leone which was held in Washington, D.C., on June 11, 1994. The chapters fall into one of two sections: preindependence and postindependence periods of Sierra Leone history. The essays in the first section concentrate on religious and commercial activities of Muslims: Islam in the northern hinterland and its influence on the development of the Sierra Leone Colony (David E. Skinner); Trade and Islam in Sierra Leone, 18th-20th centuries (Allen M. Howard); Alhaji Momodu Allie: Muslim Fula entrepreneur in colonial Sierra Leone (Alusine Jalloh); Religion, gender, and education in northern Sierra Leone, 1896-1992 (Sylvia Ojukutu-Macauley). The essays in the second section evaluate the significance of Muslim entrepreneurship, organizations, and popular culture in postcolonial Sierra Leone: Muslim Fula merchants and the motor transport business in Freetown, 1961-1978 (Alusine Jalloh); Islamic organization and influence in Sierra Leone, 1930-1990 (David E.
