Abstract: | The gap between increasing food imports and exports is a problem which affects Egypt's agricultural trade balance and hence Egypt's balance of payments. The present study, based on a PhD thesis (1994) by Gaber A.B. Shehata, looks at the relative importance of agricultural exports and imports to total national exports and imports in the period 1975-1990. It finds that the main problem of Egyptian foreign agricultural trade is the continuous increase in the quantity of imports, and the decrease in the export quantities of the main agricultural crops, such as cotton, rice, onions, oranges and potatoes. Egyptian foreign agricultural trade is unable, therefore, to finance the plans of economic development. App., bibliogr. |
