Abstract:Drought has been a common though irregular feature of the savanna areas of Nigeria. Generally, however, the most severely affected are the semiarid areas within the Sudan and Sahel zones of Nigeria. At least five major drought periods with resultant famine have been reported in Nigeria in the 20th century: in 1913-1914, 1931-1932, 1942-1943, 1972-1973, and 1983-1984. Since the 1972-1973 drought, the phenomenon of desertification, or desert encroachment, has probably been the most devastating environmental problem. The impact on soil moisture depletion, reduction in size or drying up of streams, rivers and lakes, and loss of soil fertility, contribute substantially to a reduction in agricultural productivity. The government has taken a number of measures to combat the problems of drought and desertification. Additional strategies include intensified afforestation through the establishment of plantations, more efficient use of fuelwood and greater use of alternative sources of domestic heat energy, agroforestry, effective utilization of available water resources, and improved agronomic practices and food storage.
