Abstract: | From the beginnings of the emergence of a broad, interdisciplinary field of inquiry called African Studies there has been a definable subfield called Portuguese Africa, Portuguese-speaking Africa, or lusophone Africa, comprising Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Cabo Verde and São Tomé. The apparent linguistic and colonial unity of Portuguese-speaking Africa and the emergence of the coordinated national liberation movements in these countries constituted powerful forces to maintain the facade of this concept. However, lusophone Africa is entirely a colonial construct and there is no meaningful scholarly subject area by this name except under very specific historical circumstances. Notes, ref. |
