Abstract: | In the period 1985-1996 more than 11,600 people died in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. Thousands more were injured, rendered homeless, or have become refugees. Violence in the region has left a trail of devastation. This detailed study, covering events from 1976 to 1996, focuses on the politically motivated violence in KwaZulu/Natal from the early 1980s, though its roots lie further back in time. It provides a comprehensive perspective of the viewpoints of both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). It describes the theories put forward by each to explain the conflict, and identifies the evidence which appears to support each theory. The study also describes relevant reports of the Goldstone commission and the Transitional Executive Council (TEC), as well as the De Kock and Malan trials and the insights these provide into the 'third-force' role in violence. |
