Abstract: | Computers and the Internet can greatly enhance people's ability to conduct legal research within Zambia and gain access to Zambian and international law, as well as improve the entire Zambian legal information distribution system. However, in order for these and other benefits to be fully realized within Zambia, the computerization of the Zambian legal community must be both coordinated and innovative. Both the Internet legal website or Law Server, as it is commonly called, and the Zambian Legal Information Institute, whose primary role is to maintain the Law Server, set up by the University of Zambia School of Law in Lusaka since January 1996, are well-positioned to play a central and active role in this regard. The author, a Peace Corps volunteer and lecturer at the University of Zambia School of Law since February 1995, outlines the difficulties of accessing legal information in Zambia, the contents of the Law Server, its potential benefits, and the potential pitfalls, the most urgent of which is the Law Server's long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
