energy consumption
Abstract:Among the factors contributing to environmental degeneration in Côte d'Ivoire, energy consumption plays a particularly important role that is essentially perceived at two levels: deforestation and deterioration of natural environments as a result of the use of biomass energy; and greenhouse effect gas emissions as a result of the use and transformation of fossil energies and fuelwood. Fuelwood consumption in Côte d'Ivoire in 1990 resulted in a decrease of up to 10 million tons of primary wood. However, the problem is less the volume of wood collected than its geographical distribution and the factors that characterize its evolution. The deterioration of wooded areas has had direct consequences such as rain-induced erosion, soil degeneration, and loss in biodiversity. With an energy consumption reaching 3.4 million tons of petroleum equivalent in 1990, Côte d'Ivoire emitted an equivalent of 25 million tons of CO2 equivalent. 82 percent of greenhouse effect gas emissions are attributed to the consumption and transformation of biomass.
