Abstract: | Urbanization in Ghana has had profound effects on the character of Asante society in general and the role of property in particular. The Asante have had to subjugate their own interests to the interests of the State and this has adversely affected Asante traditional social and political values. This article examines the consequences for the status of women in Asante, in particular for women's access to land. It surveys the place of women in traditional Asante society, paying attention to the institution of chieftaincy, marriage, inheritance, and land tenure practices. Then it deals with the effects of modernization on the Asante system of land tenure, focusing on the implications for women. It shows that while the traditional Asante tenure system was not discriminatory and women had the same access to land as men, in the modern economy, women are not able to participate fully. This is due not to any institutional constraints, but to women's maladjustment in the new economic order. Bibliogr., ref., sum. in French and Italian. |
