Abstract:The author's describe the system by which women are reciprocally given and received in marriage, and the accompanying marriage prestations, as it exist among the Anufóm. The system of marriage and marriage prestations is the subject of a great number of disputes brought before two judicial institutions in this area: the Tribunal Coutumier de Première Instance and the Court of the Paramount Chief. There is significant disparity between the traditional ideas on these subjects as expressed by the Anufòm and as formulated by these courts as well as between the vieuws of the Tribunal and those of the Court. This is illustrated in the following sections: 1. The Anufò marriage system (The exchange of women; Marriage prestations; Restitution of marriage prestations) - 2. The law in action (Case 1: The Tribunal Coutumier de Ire Instance; The Court of the Paramount chief) - 3. Discussion about differences between the vieuws of the Tribunal and the Court of the Paramount Chief. Diagr., notes, ref.
