Abstract:	Open learning systems and distance education can go a long way towards alleviating the problems faced by persons with physical disabilities in their efforts to improve themselves academically. Radio and television can also be used as a way of providing nonresidential home-based education. The Open Learning Systems Education Trust, established in South Africa in 1992, and distance education in Zimbabwe, notably through the University College of Distance Education, set up in 1992, and the Zimbabwe Integrated National Teachers Education Course (ZINTEC) programme, which provides trainee primary school teachers with distance education materials, are examples of the type of systems which are beginning to take shape in Africa.
