Abstract:In 1996, a workshop was held in Harare on the water quality of Lake Chivero in Zimbabwe. In this lake pollution loads are at their highest level since the lake was built in 1952. The major source of pollution is the sewage treatment works that discharges substandard sewage effluent from the City of Harare into the rivers that feed into Lake Chivero. Industrial discharges have also increased the level of various heavy metals in the lake. The chapters in this volume (based on the papers presented at the workshop) highlight the causes, as well as the consequences and extent of the pollution. They also suggest possible solutions.
