Abstract: | Road construction and handicraft production are the main money earning jobs for people living in the Xade area in the Ghanzi district of southwestern Botswana. Based on fieldwork in 1987-1988, the author studies the involvement of the San (Bushmen) in these two activities. For the construction labourers there are no differences in pay between the sexes or between ethnic groups. In the case of handicrafts manufacture, the San prefer to make hunting tool kits, while the Kgalagadi purchase skins from the San to make bags with fasteners. Despite the opportunity for high cash earnings, there are very few San who continue in either forms of employment. The San prefer not to commit themselves to a lifestyle involving long-term methodical work, reflecting their preference for a flexible subsistence lifestyle. Bibliogr., notes, sum. |
