Abstract: | The context for research at universities is changing, the notion of a 'market university' is gaining currency. Universities can rely less on dedicated academic research funding and are forced, in part, to compete with off-campus research facilities for contracts where research has a value determined often by nonacademic criteria. What are the implications for traditional academic research, for the kind of research undertaken, for the way it is published, for the way postgraduate students are taught, and for the way in which research operations at universities are managed? These are the questions the author discusses in relation to a case study on the recent experience of the Energy and Development Research Centre (EDRC) at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. This centre has already reached a situation of heavy reliance on contract research and could provide useful lessons for other research centres embarking on this path. Notes. |
