Abstract:This article reconstructs the history of Italian colonial cartography on the basis of an analysis of the role of maps in the Italian defeat in the battle of Adua, Ethiopia (1896). The situation of Italian cartography at the end of the 19th century is assessed and the maps used in Ethiopia by General Baratieri are identified. The errors in these maps indicate that the Italian project of colonial conquest was undertaken with an intellectual and technical luggage insufficient to guarantee the success of the operation. On a more theoretical level, the article considers the cartographical mechanisms through which information is selected and produced. Notes, ref., sum. in English and French, text in Italian.
