Abstract:By 1991, women constituted 40 percent of South Africa's economically active population. This article reports on the views of working women on certain workplace issues. These issues include the extent to which women experience job satisfaction; the extent to which they experience problems in their jobs; their feelings about their jobs; and the status of various issues related to their jobs. The article is based on a survey conducted among more than 1700 members of the Women's Bureau of South Africa (WBSA). WBSA membership cuts across various organizations and 40 percent of its membership is black. While black women represented a minority in the survey (18 percent), a comparison was made between the responses of black and white women to highlight important differences and similarities. The majority of the women who took part in the survey were business women, professional women and managers. They were very positive about their work and regarded stress as the biggest problem.
